Bio
Kim Smith - Collage
My collages are meant to be intimate and thought provoking. They should evoke a peaceful, quiet and simultaneously compelling response from viewers. One often finds a humorous or unexpected element within the frame.
I use art as a form of relaxation and often spend days exploring galleries and museums. The artwork can have an overwhelming impact and strike me with a breath-stopping raw energy that makes me want to produce my own work. Having the time and space to feed this desire is enriching.
I was born in Seattle, Washington in 1961 and spent 10 years of my childhood in Germany. Armed with degrees in Design, Economics, and an MBA, doesn’t it seem fitting that I try my hand as an artist? After a decade of studying art vicariously through friends, observing and contemplating, I plunged into my own creativity.
As a result of living in and traveling extensively throughout Europe, I am greatly influenced by the Dada, Bauhaus, and Wiener Werkstätte movements, as well as Russian Constructivism. I like working with old material - pieces of paper from everyday life such as photographs, letters, and book pages. I find pleasure in gathering old things to savor for later use.
